What to Expect during an Engagement Session

Engagement sessions are one of my favorite parts about the wedding experience as a Rochester, NY wedding photographer. They are not about stiff posing with awkward interactions. Instead, they are about capturing how it actually feels to be in this season together.

If it's getting beautiful shots at The Eastman House in Rochester or somewhere meaningful to you, engagement sessions are meant to feel easy and natural.

When Emma and Connor reached out to me they wanted to have The Eastman Museum as their beautiful backdrop. Being a wedding photographer from Rochester, NY, I knew the wintery snow would be the perfect addition for a magical scene.

When we had our call Emma & Connor expressed how they can be hyper aware of the camera and there were concerns about feeling a little uncomfortable. I have heard this a thousand times before. I expect it, but am never worried by it. Most couples don’t step in front of a camera every day, and feeling a little awkward at first is completely normal. That’s why I approach engagement sessions with a lot of movement and gentle guidance. Instead of stiff posing, I use prompts that encourage natural interaction like walking together, laughing, pulling each other close, or taking moment just be present.

I’ll guide you when you need direction, but I also leave space for you to be natural with each other. Some of the most meaningful moments happen in between the prompts, when the pressure fades and you start to forget the camera is even there. My goal is for your session to feel relaxed, easy, and true to who you are — not overly posed or forced.

By the end of the session, it usually feels less like a photoshoot and more like spending time together, with beautiful images as proof of that experience.
